We're the organisation that protects and improves the environment across England and Wales - that's the air you breathe, the land you walk on and the water you drink, wash with, fish from and swim in.
Since 1996, we've managed a breathtaking mix of high-profile projects that have protected us from the rigours of our environment, and many others that have enhanced it. These include leading awareness campaigns to raise the profile of important environmental issues and advising government, local authorities, pressure groups, businesses, farmers, police and the public on what needs to be done. We're also environmental regulators in areas such as waste disposal and nuclear safety, are responsible for regulating various types of businesses and have managed everything from river stocks to conservation sites.
We've been reducing pollution from industry for many years now, and one day hope to make smog and acid rain a thing of the past. Our rivers and bathing waters are cleaner now than they have been for two hundred years. We're heavily involved with reservoir proposals that will bring reliable water supplies to areas across the South East which have been hit by drought. Plus, we're cleaning up dozens of places that have been badly damaged by industry over the last century.
We're a government-funded organisation which means we continually strive to do more for the environment, and to find better, faster and more efficient ways of working - so that the public gets real value for money. With this attitude firmly in the minds of our 12,000 plus talented people, and a budget of circa £1025 million last year, we're in a great position to build on our impressive progress to date. We will continue the vital work we are doing - much of it crucial to our way of life. It's a challenge not many engineers can lay claim to, and will ensure that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier environment.
